Our youngest learners develop their English through songs, stories, rhymes and conversation, building vocabulary, oral grammar and confidence through play and shared reading. Based on extensive educational research into how children learn to read, students first develop secure phonics and decoding skills in French before transferring them to English. This carefully sequenced approach builds strong foundations for literacy in both languages.

Students explore a rich range of contemporary and classic literature while developing increasingly sophisticated reading, writing and oracy skills.  Through discussion and purposeful use of oral grammar, they learn to construct and develop increasingly complex sentences, building the foundations for high-level writing. They analyse language and structure, discuss and justify their ideas, and write in a range of genres including narrative, poetry, journalism and persuasive writing, adapting their style for different audiences and purposes.

As students mature, they become increasingly analytical readers and independent writers. They explore increasingly challenging literature, discuss themes and characters, refine their writing across a range of genres and develop their confidence through presentations, discussion and debate. Reading, writing and oracy continue to develop together, preparing students for the demands of Middle School and beyond.

English extends beyond the classroom through experiences that bring literature and storytelling to life. Students take part in poetry recitals, creative writing competitions and drama performances, while visits to places such as Shakespeare's Globe and theatre productions help them experience literature beyond the page. These experiences encourage students to read widely, think critically and develop their own voice as readers, writers and speakers.
