Mandarin

From Year 4 onwards, students have the opportunity to learn Mandarin Chinese, one of the world's most widely spoken languages. Taught by native Mandarin-speaking teachers, lessons immerse students in the language while introducing them to the richness and diversity of Chinese culture. Learning Mandarin develops valuable linguistic and cognitive skills, while opening the door to new ways of thinking and communicating.

Learning Mandarin

From their very first lessons, students start developing practical language skills through songs, games, stories and role play, learning how to introduce themselves, ask and answer questions, and communicate in everyday situations.

As their confidence grows, students begin writing Chinese characters and expand their vocabulary through topics such as family, school, food, hobbies, seasons, transport and celebrations. They also discover aspects of Chinese culture through festivals, traditional stories, crafts and music, making language learning both meaningful and enjoyable.

By Upper Primary, students are reading and writing increasingly complex characters, developing conversational fluency and preparing for internationally recognised Youth Chinese Test (YCT) qualifications, providing a strong foundation for continued study in Middle and Senior School.

Beyond the Classroom

Language learning is enriched through cultural experiences that bring Mandarin to life, including celebrating festivals such as Lunar New Year, a highlight of the school year!

For students who continue studying Mandarin beyond Primary, there is the opportunity to take part in a school trip to China, where they can practise their language skills and experience Chinese culture first-hand.
