Mathematics

Mathematics at Jeannine Manuel School combines intellectual rigour with curiosity and problem-solving. Students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts while learning to think logically, communicate precisely and apply their knowledge with confidence, even when solving unfamiliar problems.

As they progress through Middle School, they build increasingly sophisticated mathematical reasoning through a programme that draws on the strengths of both the English and French educational traditions, providing excellent preparation for the next steps in their educational journeys.

What Students Experience

Students encounter a rich and varied curriculum that develops both procedural fluency and conceptual understanding. They explore topics including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, functions, statistics and probability while tackling increasingly complex problems that encourage logical reasoning and mathematical creativity. Across Middle School, learning progresses from establishing strong numerical foundations to modelling relationships, proving geometrical results and applying mathematics to real-life situations.

How Students Learn

Lessons encourage students to question, explain and justify their thinking rather than simply finding the correct answer. Through collaborative investigation, independent problem-solving and regular opportunities to discuss mathematical reasoning, students learn to approach unfamiliar challenges with confidence and resilience.

In Years 9 and 10, students study mathematics through both English and French. Encountering different mathematical conventions, methods and approaches to problem-solving deepens conceptual understanding while strengthening their ability to communicate mathematical ideas with precision across both languages.

Beyond the Classroom

Students are encouraged to extend their mathematical thinking beyond lessons through a wide range of enrichment opportunities. They take part in national and international initiatives such as the Kangourou des Mathématiques, Olympiades des Mathématiques, Semaine des Maths and UKMT Maths Challenge, where they tackle challenging problems, collaborate with their peers and experience mathematics in new and engaging ways. These activities celebrate creativity, curiosity and the enjoyment of mathematical discovery.

Looking Ahead

By the end of Middle School, students have developed the confidence to analyse complex problems, communicate mathematical reasoning clearly and apply their knowledge in unfamiliar contexts. The bilingual approach in Years 9 and 10 equips them to move confidently between different mathematical conventions and ways of thinking, providing excellent preparation for STEM IGCSEs as well as both the BFI and the IB.
