Physical Education
Physical Education at Jeannine Manuel School encourages students to challenge themselves, work collaboratively and develop the confidence to lead active, healthy lives. Through a broad and varied programme, students build physical skills alongside resilience, teamwork, leadership and respect for others.
Combining individual and team activities, the curriculum encourages every student to discover new strengths, embrace challenges and develop a lifelong appreciation of physical activity.
What Students Experience
Students experience a diverse range of sports and physical activities throughout Middle School, developing technical skills, tactical understanding and physical confidence across different environments. They take part in team sports, for example hockey, rugby, ultimate frisbee or softball, alongside individual sports like gymnastics, dance, athletics and climbing. Year 7 students also develop confidence and competence in the water through a dedicated swimming programme.
Learning takes place in excellent facilities, both off and on-site, including our dedicated climbing wall, where students build problem-solving skills, resilience and trust as they learn to climb safely and support one another.
How Students Learn
Students are encouraged to think as well as move. They learn to analyse performance, make tactical decisions, set personal goals and reflect on their progress, while taking on responsibilities such as refereeing, coaching and supporting teammates. Throughout the programme, respect, cooperation and fair play are valued as highly as physical performance.
The curriculum is designed to ensure that every student experiences success, whether mastering a new climbing route, improving their swimming technique, contributing to a team strategy or developing the confidence to perform in front of others.
Beyond the Classroom
Sport plays an important role in school life beyond lessons. Students have opportunities to represent Jeannine Manuel School in fixtures and competitions where they experience the excitement of competition while building teamwork, resilience and school spirit. These experiences encourage students to challenge themselves, celebrate collective success and develop lasting friendships through sport.
Looking Ahead
By the end of Middle School, students have developed the skills, confidence and resilience to approach physical activity with independence and purpose. They are well prepared for the physical education programme in Upper School, where they continue to develop performance, leadership and personal wellbeing while building habits that support an active lifestyle beyond school.
