Science

Lorem Ipsum Dolor

Science begins with curiosity. Through observation, experimentation and critical thinking, students develop an understanding of the principles that govern the natural world and learn how scientific knowledge is built, tested and refined.

Across Middle School, students study biology, chemistry, physics, and technology, exploring ideas that range from the structure of matter and the origins of the Universe to living systems, energy, forces and the dynamic processes that shape our planet. Practical investigation lies at the heart of the curriculum, encouraging students to question, test and evaluate evidence while developing precision in scientific thinking.

What Students Experience

Across Years 7–10, students explore an exciting range of scientific concepts through biology, chemistry and physics. They investigate the characteristics of living organisms, genetics and human biology, study the behaviour of materials, electricity, energy and chemical reactions, and develop an understanding of forces, light, sound, Earth science and the wider Universe.

The curriculum encourages students to make connections between scientific ideas while considering their wider applications. Through topics such as climate change, renewable energy, evolution and geology, they learn how science helps us understand the world and respond to contemporary challenges.

How Students Learn

Scientific enquiry is central to learning. Students ask questions, design investigations, carry out practical experiments and analyse evidence before drawing informed conclusions. Laboratory work is complemented by modelling, observation, measurement and data analysis, helping students understand not only scientific concepts but also the methods scientists use to investigate them.

As they progress through Middle School, students develop increasing confidence in scientific reasoning, mathematical problem-solving and precise communication. They learn to think critically, evaluate evidence and apply their knowledge to unfamiliar situations.

Beyond the Classroom

Science comes to life beyond the classroom through fieldwork, practical enquiry and visits to some of London's leading scientific institutions. Whether collecting ecological data in Epping Forest or exploring the collections of the Science Museum, students experience science first-hand and see how scientific discoveries continue to shape our understanding of the natural world.

Looking Ahead

The Middle School curriculum provides a strong foundation for the French National Brevet and enables students to choose separate IGCSE courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics before progressing to advanced STEM pathways in Upper School.

More importantly, students develop the curiosity, analytical thinking and investigative skills that underpin scientific discovery. These habits of mind prepare them to engage confidently with the scientific, technological and environmental challenges of the future.
