Eco Schools Green Flag award

Jeannine Manuel School is delighted to be awarded the coveted Eco-Schools Green Flag Award with Distinction. Awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in recognition of successful implementation of the Seven Steps framework, the internationally recognised accreditation rewards learner participation, curriculum integration, governance, action, community engagement and continuous improvement. The Green Flag also signifies that the school has made an ongoing commitment to whole-school learning and student-led action through sustainability education.

"We are incredibly proud of our pupils and everyone who has contributed to this achievement", said Ms Matharan-Brizard, Assistant Head (Years 7 and 8) who runs the school's Eco-Committee alongside Ms Marcel, Teacher of Science.

Here are a few of the key projects that have helped contribute to the school’s award:

  • Discovering London's biodiversity through educational visits;
  • The Alvéole Project: Our partnership with Alvéole, an organisation specialising in urban beekeeping and environmental education, has now entered its fourth consecutive year;
  • The Bedford Garden project: the Eco Committee continues to develop this wonderful garden in the heart of our Middle School; the garden has gradually evolved into an outdoor classroom where biodiversity can be explored through direct observation. Pupils learn about plant life cycles, pollination, soil quality, food production and seasonal change while developing patience, responsibility and teamwork;
  • As an international school located in central London, we aim to demonstrate that biodiversity can flourish even within an urban environment and that every pupil can contribute to protecting local ecosystems;
  • Healthy and sustainable eating formed one of the central themes of Earth Day 2026, where members of the Eco-Committee designed and led interactive workshops which explored how our food choices affect biodiversity, climate change and natural resources;
  • The integration of practical workshops, outdoor learning and peer-led activities has strengthened pupils' understanding that healthy choices can benefit both individuals and the planet;
  • Every pupil took part in Healthy Living activities through PSHE lessons, Earth Day workshops, educational visits and curriculum projects;
  • “Wildlife in London” photo competition, a project which illustrates the school's ability to combine creativity and environmental awareness;
  • The Cut Your Carbon campaign;
  • The school's continued commitment to sustainable travel has contributed to maintaining its Transport for London STARS Gold Accreditation.

We look forward to building on what has been achieved and continuing to make a positive difference within our school community.
